Facebook IPO Continues Mark Zuckerberg’s ‘Open’ Philosophy

Posted by jbrisbane on May 18th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

Wearing his signature hoodie and jeans, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg rang the bell to open the Nasdaq Stock Market from the company’s Menlo Park, California, headquarters Friday morning (May 18) as his company went public with the biggest ever initial public offering by a tech company. Going for $38 per share, the offering raised $16 billion for the social networking website, which is inarguably one of, if not the most important and impactful tech company for the millennial generation.

Zuckerberg has always been a natural at balancing the demands of running the world’s biggest social network, which boasts more than 900 million users around the world, while himself being an example of his generation’s focus on being open and forward-thinking without the pretense and show of past business leaders.

The self-made billionaire is the ultimate everyman, albeit one with a genius intellect, and it’s a side of himself he showed off in earnest last year when MTV visited Facebook HQ for its special, “The Diary of Facebook.”

“Facebook is a very open company. If you think about what we do, we’re trying to give all these people who use our products the ability to share things with their friends and their family,” Zuckerberg told MTV News. “The mission is to make the world more open and connected. So we believe that if that’s what we’re trying to do in the world then that’s how we should run the company too.”

Zuckerberg went on to describe the philosophy with which he runs Facebook, now one of the most financially valuable in the world, and it stands in diametric opposition to how we view the modern corporate executive. There are no sequestered corner offices at Facebook HQ, no CEOs sporting expensive designer suits.

“We have this really open floor plan. People are all sitting out near each other. It’s easy for everyone to turn to their neighbor and start talking,” the Facebook boss continued. “I have a desk out there just like everyone else. … That kind of collaborative and connected culture is what produces the best products for the people who are going to use them.”

His philosophy on how to run a modern company may ultimately change the face of business moving forward. Friday’s massive IPO did many things, but one of the biggest, coming in the midst of an ongoing financial crisis created by men in suits, was to prove that the future doesn’t smoke cigars in executive lounges, it wears a hoodie and sits with the engineers who make it all happen.

You can see it all for yourself as MTV re-airs “The Diary of Facebook” Saturday (May 19) at 9 a.m. the doc is also available online at MTV.com.

‘American Idol’ Finale: Phillip Phillips Vs. Jessica Sanchez

Posted by jbrisbane on May 18th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

The “American Idol” finale is set, and Joshua Ledet didn’t get an invite.

Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez will compete in next week’s season finale after Ledet was voted off the show Thursday (May 17). Ledet, the 20-year-old from Westlake, Louisiana, who was continually praised as one of the best contestants to ever grace the “Idol” stage, received the lowest number of votes from the 90 million votes cast, according to “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest.

Ledet set a record for standing ovations from the judges this season on “Idol”; barely a week went by when he didn’t get the judges on their feet after one of his stellar performances. Ledet performed James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” at the close of the show Thursday, repeating a song that became one of his signature moments.

Show mentor Jimmy Iovine took partial blame for Ledet’s performance Wednesday, saying by choosing Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama,” he didn’t give him a song with enough of a melody to captivate the audience and generate votes. “There was something missing, and I know it was the material. In fairness, I gave him a song that didn’t have enough melody. Joshua needs melody, [and] I take 100 percent responsibility for that,” Iovine said.

Still, he thought Ledet deserved to compete for the “Idol” crown next week. “Does Joshua belong in this finale? 100 percent, he should be in anyone’s finale,” he said.

Ledet’s elimination gives Sanchez a shot at being the first female “Idol” winner since Jordin Sparks back in season six. At the onset of the season, it was said to be the women’s year on “Idol,” and four of the top six contestants were female. But three women were picked off in a row ? Elise Testone, then Skylar Laine, then Hollie Cavanagh ? threatening the show’s girl-power contingent. Now Sanchez is carrying the torch for the ladies.

Iovine, in summing up Wednesday’s performances, also blamed himself for picking a bad song for Sanchez, but said Phillips won the night with his version of Bob Seger’s “We’ve Got Tonight.” “Hands down, it was the best performance he’s done in the entire contest,” he said, calling it “flawless.” (In fairness, Iovine also said Phillips’ version of Matchbox Twenty’s “Disease” was “a total snooze-fest.”

Regarding Sanchez, Iovine said, “She has to have the most magical moment she’s had so far” in order to win it all. “If she gets in the finale,” he said, “It’s about the songs.”

Before Ledet’s elimination, Jackson said the final contestants were “three of the best we’ve ever had” and said all three have “big careers” ahead of them.

Also on Thursday’s show, Adam Lambert dropped by to perform “Never Close Our Eyes,” and Lisa Marie Presley (huh?) performed her new single “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.”

What did you think of “Idol” on Thursday? Did the right contestants make the finale? Let us know in the comments!

Donna Summer ‘Definitely Influenced’ Flo Rida, Other EDM Acts

Posted by jbrisbane on May 18th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

The surprised, sincere and heartfelt reactions continue to roll in as the news of Disco Queen Donna Summer’s untimely passing Thursday (May 17) spreads far and wide. Summer influenced the music industry as a whole, but her impact is especially felt in today’s electronic dance music ? which includes current club-anthem king Flo Rida.

“I was just looking at something with her months ago,” the “Wild Ones” singer told MTV News. “Today, when I got a text message [about her death], I thought, ‘Wow, she passed away.’ She definitely is one of those iconic people when it comes down to the dance scene and all that. My condolences go out to all her family. She definitely influenced what I do.”

Speaking to Summer’s genre-bending influence, house-music forefather Frankie Knuckles called her unforgettable hit “I Feel Love” one of the most commercial electronic pieces of music ever written.

“Today you can hear its influence on all popular Dance music, House, Techno, Trance,” he told MTV News in a statement. “She was deemed ‘The Queen Of Disco.’ She’s been sampled and ideas of her songs have crept into today’s popular dance music by everybody. Her association with [legendary record producer] Giorgio Moroder set the tone for what Dance Music is all about.”

“Donna Summer RIP I FEEL LOVE FOR YOU,” Swedish dance-pop princess Robyn tweeted, adding a link to a Summer performance of “I Feel Love.”

The reception of Summer’s iconic 1977 anthem essentially revolutionized music, not to mention the rest of her chart-toppers that would soon follow.

“One day in Berlin, [Brian] Eno came running in and said, ‘I have heard the sound of the future,’ ” David Bowie famously wrote in the liner notes to Sound and Vision. “He puts on ‘I Feel Love,’ by Donna Summer. … He said, ‘This is it, look no further. This single is going to change the sound of club music for the next 15 years.’ Which was more or less right.”

Donna Summer’s Legacy: A Pop-Culture Guide

Posted by jbrisbane on May 18th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

The death of Donna Summer on Thursday (May 17) at age 63 after a long battle with cancer has many reflecting on the impact the disco legend had on music.

While many may not realize it, Summer is the foremother of, well, just about every pop song on the radio today. Her iconic 1977 anthem “I Feel Love,” which peaked at #6 on the Billboard singles chart (one of 14 top 10 hits), was the first mainstream song to be produced using an entirely synthesized backing track. Until then, most disco recordings had been backed by acoustic orchestras, and the reception to the song revolutionized music.

Indeed, imagine the music of Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Katy Perry and countless others minus their ubiquitous glittering synths. You can’t. Without what was at the time a risky and bold move, modern dance music might not exist as it does today.

Summer’s impact on music is so vast it’s nearly incalculable, but in memory of the disco diva, we’re looking back on some of the ways her music has survived through the years, has been brought to life by other artists and how many of music’s biggest names counted themselves as fans of the Queen of Disco.

» The refrain from Summer’s 17-minute 1975 breakthrough “Love to Love You Baby” is sampled on Beyoncé’s hit “Naughty Girl” from her debut solo album Dangerously in Love.

For photos of Donna Summer through the years, click here.

» For the elaborate opening sequence of Madonna’s 2006 Confessions Tour, a 2-ton, $4 million disco ball was lowered onto the stage at the end of the runway and then opened to reveal the star, who started into her own synth-heavy “Future Lovers” before the song dissolved seamlessly into Summer’s “I Feel Love.”

» Summer’s “Starting Over Again” was transformed into a #1 country hit for Dolly Parton in 1980, and even reached the top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, a rare feat for a country track at the time. Fifteen years later, another country superstar, Reba McEntire, named her 1995 album after the song, and her version was a hit country single the following year. In the set’s liner notes, McEntire dedicated the song to both Summer and Parton, saying she admired both immensely.

» Summer’s classics were go-to songs for films looking to capture the late-’70s/early-’80s era and are featured in, among many others, “Frost/Nixon,” “Charlie Wilson’s War” and “Splash.”

» “Hot Stuff” and “MacArthur Park” are go-to songs for reality singing contestants looking to prove their range ? Summer was a mezzo-soprano with a powerhouse delivery ? while keeping things upbeat. Both songs have been performed on “The X Factor” and “American Idol.”

» “She Works Hard for the Money” was covered by Kris Allen during an episode of “American Idol,” and his performance was so well-received that the season-eight winner recorded the track for the American Idol Season 8 CD.

» Summer herself appeared as Aunt Oona from Altoona on two episodes of the hit sitcom “Family Matters.”

» Bruce Springsteen was a big Summer fan and wrote two songs for her. The first one, “Cover Me,” he ultimately recorded for his own Born to Run, but Summer recorded the second, “Protection,” and Springsteen and the E Street Band supplied the track.

» Keri Hilson portrayed Summer in her music video for her 2010 hit “Pretty Girl Rock.”

» Summer is easily one of the most sampled artists in the history of music. “I Feel Love” has been sampled by some of the biggest artists in dance, from Madonna and Britney Spears to David Guetta and Moby, and covered by artists as diverse as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kylie Minogue and Blondie.

Lady Gaga’s 26th Birthday: Her 10 Best MTV Quotes!

Posted by jbrisbane on May 17th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

Listen up, Little Monsters: It’s Mother Monster’s 26th birthday! And in that quarter of a century (plus one year!), Lady Gaga has managed to reinvent the pop wheel with her eccentric persona and pumping, politically charged dance music. When asked how she planned to celebrate another year, she simply told a Monster on Twitter, “Quinceanera.”

While we’ll be Quinceañera-ing in spirit, we will celebrate her colorful life and career by remembering 10 of the most-revealing bites she’s shared with MTV News. So, dabble on some glitter, put on your best wig, platforms and leotard, and let’s take a stroll down memory lane ? in no particular order.

10. In 2009, Gaga sat down and explained that when “Poker Face” was re-imagined by Kanye West and Kid Cudi as “I Poke Her Face” (later changed to “Make Her Say”), she felt that it was time for someone to get the true meaning of the lady-love euphemism.

Check out our Lady Gaga soundboard, and leave a birthday message for Mother Monster!

“It’s funny, because a lot of my fans were like, ‘Gaga, Kanye wrote a song … and it’s not about what your record’s about. Your record is about gambling, and this song is about dirty sex things,’ ” she recalled. “I said to them, ‘You’re wrong. Kanye was right,’ ” she explained, laughing.

“That’s exactly what this song is about. The record is about how I used to fantasize about women when I was with my boyfriend. It was really exciting that he had so much insight into what the song was about. He’s a cool guy.”

9. Gaga’s pop-music kinship with Beyoncé has been well-documented in two songs: G’s “Telephone” and B’s “Video Phone.” When Gaga headed to shoot the Hype Williams-directed video for “Video Phone,” she had this message for the team: “I said, ‘I want to do you in your video, and I want to tribute you. I want to dress up like you,’ ” Gaga recalled telling her co-star. “And Hype Williams … was so excited. He was like, ‘Gaga, I want no makeup on your face.’ It was really stripped down ? real Beyoncé hair, and we wore the same outfit in the video, and I [paid tribute to] her.”

8. Gaga’s love for her hometown of NYC is hardly surprising, and she shared on the MTV special “Inside the Outside” that when she sat down to write the track “Marry the Night,” “he” was the perfect muse to inspire the song. “It’s never gonna go away, the tan of New York never goes away,” she explained about always identifying with the city that bred her.

7. During the same special, Gaga opened up about her other inspiration ? her fans ? adding, “The biggest surprise to me has been my relationship with my fans. They’ve changed my life. The fans are the thing that you can’t learn; they were the instrument in the music that nobody taught me about.”

6. Always politically charged and motivated, Gaga has made it her mission to not only make chart-topping music, but also be a voice for the disenfranchised. When she sat down for “MTV First: Lady Gaga” in 2011, she explained that, despite her strong political beliefs, she wouldn’t want to run for office.

“Well, first of all, I wouldn’t want to be president for the day,” she said. “And I say that because I really, for myself, it’s important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate because politics can constrain things,” she continued. “So, our message can be completely free of any politics, and we can just surge forward.”

5. During that “MTV First,” when she debuted her video for “Yoü and I,” the singer discussed how difficult love can sometimes be and how her art explores that theme. “Sometimes in love, you can’t make it work,” she said. “No matter what you do, there’s this giant boundary between you and someone else. So, that’s what it’s about: perceiving in your imagination that there’s something magical inside of you that you can make it work.”

4. At the 2011 VMAs, she pulled the ultimate costume change by appearing as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone. Gaga, as Jo, took home the Moonman for her fist-pumping equality anthem “Born This Way.” Afterward, Jo explained, “She was texting me after the award, after I picked it up for her, and she just said, ‘You know, more than anything I’ve ever gotten before, this means more to me, because “Born This Way” is about the fans and the fans are more important to me than anything I do; more important than f—ing breathing, you know?’ “

3. In late 2011, Gaga released her semi-autobiographical video for “Marry the Night,” noting that history can be reinterpreted for her art, if need be. “This was one of the first times that the fashion didn’t propel so much of the story line,” she explained. “It is autobiographical, so the entire story’s true, and it’s through the lens of how I choose to repaint my past.”

2. Behind every great woman is a great Haus. Gaga’s famed, rarely spotted, Haus of Gaga are the folks who help create the live shows, fashions and accessories she wears. And they mean everything to her. “They’re my best friends,” she said. “I’m not really sure what the world thinks … but I do hear things like, ‘Who is the Haus of Gaga?’ and ‘Are you putting out a fashion line?’ And no one gets it. It’s not a commodity. It’s not something that’s meant to be sold.

“It’s a real bond and relationship, and that’s what I think music and art is about,” she said. “They are my heart and soul. They believe in me, and they look at me like a mother and daughter and sister, with pride and love.”

1. In the end, everything Gaga does is for her art, and there’s no place Gaga feels more at home than onstage in front of thousands of screaming fans. “I don’t see the live show as extension of the record at all, it’s meant to be a completely different experience with the artist, with myself. I want my fans to come and go to a party,” she told MTV News.

“I want them to watch the show and think, ‘I’m so f—ing cool that I am here right now.’ It’s about them. It’s about love. It’s about art. The show is meant to bring a tremendous feeling and sentiment of escapism.”

What Makes ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ So Hot?

Posted by jbrisbane on May 17th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

“Fifty Shades of Grey” has become a worldwide, literary phenomenon. It’s a #1 New York Times best-seller and the most talked-about book in media. The sadomasochistic relationship between characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele has made its way into the hands of a variety of readers and hooked them into their torrid love affair. It’s become such a hit that Universal Pictures and Focus Features optioned the rights to the books after a massive bidding war, and fans are already campaigning for their favorite actors to land the lead roles.

But what’s the reason for the book’s popularity? With countless erotic and romance stories on bookshelves, what makes “Fifty Shades” stand out? When author E L James headed to New York’s Union Square for a signing at Barnes & Noble, MTV News asked fans to weigh in on why they thought the work was widely recognized.

For one, buzz surrounded the novel because of its origins. James adapted Christian and Ana from Stephenie Meyer’s Edward Cullen and Bella Swan, beginning the tale as “Twilight” fan fiction.

“[James] took ‘Twilight’ to a next level, because as pure as [Edward and Bella's] love was, it was not like this book,” one fan explained. “She took it to the next level and gave America something that they were waiting and looking for.”

Another reader told us the mystery behind a dominant/submissive relationship is what sparked the frenzy. “I think this book has become such a phenomenon because it’s something that hasn’t really been spoken about before,” she said. “Women usually don’t talk about these things.”

In agreement, another fan added: “Everyone has something that they want to enact. And they’re just not able to express it, but they’re able to read it.”

Put in simple terms: “Fifty Shades” turns readers on. “It’s hot,” one woman said. “It’s totally sexy. I think we’ve got sex on the brain, and we want to read it. It’s really enjoyable and it’s giving us some ideas for future fantasies.”

It also helps that Christian is described as “so hot” in the book. He’s a billionaire who takes Ana on helicopter rides and showers her in expensive clothing and gifts. He’s a woman’s fantasy, one of James’ followers explains.

“All women relate to Christian,” she said. “They love him ? all women, it doesn’t matter who you talk to. They’re like, ‘I like that guy. I want to date that guy.’ “

Nero Look Forward To Playing Alongside ‘Massive Artists’ At EDC

Posted by jbrisbane on May 17th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

When MTV News first caught up with Dan Stephens, co-producer of U.K.-based electronic dance music outfit Nero (with co-producer Joseph Ray), and frequent vocal collaborator Alana Watson, last December, it was at the launch of the music video for “Reaching Out.”

The song is the fifth single from their debut album, Welcome Reality, and features original vocals by Daryl Hall of Hall & Oates fame, who recorded pieces of the Hall & Oates ’80s hit song “Out of Touch.” Nero’s other singles from the album, “Crush On You,” “Promises,” and “Must Be the Feeling,” garnered remixes from the likes of Kill the Noise, Skrillex, Flux Pavilion and Calvin Harris, to name a few.

Since then, Nero have been tirelessly touring the U.S. and U.K in support of the album, playing to frenzied fans who often even drown out Watson’s live vocals. It’s safe to say that the often bass-heavy EDM collective are more popular in the U.S. than ever before.

“We’ve literally just come off of a three-month tour of the U.K. and the U.S., and that was amazing,” Stephens revealed when MTV News caught up with him at EDM mecca XS Nightclub Las Vegas. “We love playing here. Everywhere you go at the moment in the States, people are just going crazy for electronic music. We just feel so very privileged to be doing this, and traveling around to all these amazing places in America. And people are coming and loving what we are doing so it’s great for us.”

After their highly successful North American tour and gigs at XS, Nero is set to join the ranks of Steve Angello, Calvin Harris, Avicii, Bassnectar, Chuckie, Borgore, Sub Focus, Thomas Gold and Armin Van Buuren, among many others, performing at Insomniac Events and Pacha NYC’s Electric Daisy Carnival New York this weekend.

“Really looking forward to it,” Stephens continued. “I mean EDC, they are always really great shows. You’re playing alongside massive artists who are doing similar things, electronic artists, so it’s going to be great!”

So will fans at EDC NY this weekend get a chance to preview fresh, new material? Stephens said yes, sort of, though, it’s probably too early for them to reveal new cuts from their next album.

“We wrote our album quite a while ago,” Stephens said. “And we are working on new material now for the next album, but there’s nothing that’s ready to play just yet of our next album’s material.”

“But we’ve done a few things to play out,” he continued, “stuff that isn’t going to be album material. Just basically big dance-floor tunes. A couple of bootlegs. So there is new stuff that we are playing and its going to be exciting to play it. Some of the stuff we’ve only just finished too, so it’s going to be good to gauge the crowd’s reaction.”

Usher’s ‘Climax’ Is ‘Not About Sex’

Posted by jbrisbane on May 17th, 2012 — Posted in Uncategorized

Usher admits that “over the last three years of my life, it’s no secret I went through some heavy transitions.” And he’s not joking. In 2009, he filed for a divorce from his wife, Tameka Foster, after marrying her in 2007. In the lead-up to the split, their relationship certainly came with drama, including a rift with his mother and a major health scare for Foster during a 2009 trip to Brazil.

And even with his divorce finalized, Usher is still in and out of court dealing with custody issues over their two sons, Usher and Naviyd. However, he is ready to put all that drama aside now that he’s purged those emotions for his June 12 album release, the aptly titled Looking 4 Myself.

“There’s an emotional side to it. Over the last three years of my life, it’s no secret I went through some heavy transitions and in that I really came out new,” he told MTV News during “MTV First.” “I came out feeling a sense of entitlement and a sense of ownership of all of that I went through to become better and in being able to survive it.

“So I was looking for something in the music,” he continued. “I was looking for something in life. I was looking for something in it has always been right here. It has always been there. So I kind of used the music as a dairy in a way, but a creative, artistic, art-in-motion diary.”

But, Usher is no stranger to putting his drama to music. With albums titled Confessions and Raymond v. Raymond, he has always put his personal business right where people can hear it.

“Oddly, I’ve unfortunately left my life an open book,” he said. “So every record people would assume that each and every detail is specific, even the videos.”

That includes his most recent clip for “Climax,” which follows jilted lover Usher as he contemplates shooting his girl’s other man. Soon, he charges in the house, and a gunshot is fired off. What’s unclear is whether it’s reality or just Usher’s fantasy.

“OK, I’m not sitting out in front of somebody’s house and shoot up the crib, just so you know,” he joked. ” ‘Climax’ was an interpretation to really give people a better understanding ’cause I felt like people really looked at the record for what you heard first, which was ‘Climax’. So, people thought ‘sex.’ It’s not about sex. Well, climax is about sex, but not the song. Just so we’re clear.”

The Diplo-produced track actually has more to do with the events of the last few years of his life than events in the bedroom. “The song is really about kind of the crescendo of a relationship, where you’ve reached a place where you’re gonna dive in or let it go,” he said. “And the ‘Climax’ is what it is.”

Justin Bieber: ‘I Can’t Not Dance Battle Usher’

Justin Bieber and his mentor, Usher, believe it or not, have engaged in a dance-off or two. While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves.

“Dance-offs? We had one the other night. He did this little show in New York,” Bieber explained to MTV News earlier this month about facing off against Usher during his stint in the off-Broadway “Fuerza Bruta” in April. “Mid-show, he comes in the middle of the dance floor and does a dance battle with me. And I’m like ‘I’m too tired for this.’ He pulls out moves and I can’t not dance battle Usher.

“So I go in there, do my whole thing,” he recalled. “I’m pretty sure I lost, but it’s all good.”

When they aren’t battling it out on the dance floor, it seems Usher is offering up some sage advice to the 18-year-old singer. “He’s just given me the advice of ‘Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,’ ” he said. “I think that’s probably pretty much the main thing he’s always told me.”

Usher has even more to share about working with his superstar mentee. He will open up during “MTV First: Usher,” set to take place tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. He will introduce exclusive footage from “Fuerza Bruta” and his new single, the Pharrell-produced “Twisted,” and will stick around for an interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to discuss it all, including his new June release, Looking 4 Myself, on MTV.com afterward. Fans can submit questions via MTV.com or Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskUsher.
